Khalid, The SOA Interest Group within the IFPUG New Environments Committee community has it's next meeting June 30. If you are an IFPUG member there is no cost to join this community. They already have had tremendous presentations and discussions around applying the IFPUG method for SOA and actual results and value realized. They are starting to get some helpful templates and documents put together as well. To join, just send an email to soa@ifpug.org. This community is only available to IFPUG members. Thanks Steven Woodward - Chair NEC |

Khalid, Companies are using the IFPUG method, with some interpreations and middleware IFPUG guidelines to estimate SOA service functionality effort. The "best question for you" is dependant upon many factors such as; do you have benchmarks and known productivity rates for COSMIC and/ or IFPUG Methods? Do you already use the IFPUG method for middleware estimates? etc. Having an SOA community (I think over 30 participants) within IFPUG, adds tremendous value to ensure interpretations and extensions are intuitive and valuable for the SOA related industry. Not a simple "which is best?". Similar question to, which is best "gallons" or "litres?". I'm not going there! Thanks Steven Woodward - IFPUG NEC Chair |

Khalid, You can become a student member for $50 and participate in the SOA and other NEC Interest Group communities. We have had some discussions around SOA services and productivity experiences. I attended the TM (Telecommunication Management)Forum to discuss with leaders in cloud computing service delivery. They had the same comments as those in the IFPUG SOA communuity regarding the additional expenses incurred developing cloud services. Two to three times the cost of traditional business functions. Thanks Steve |

Steve, that two or three times cost happens only for implementing SOA on an existing applications. If it is planned well ahead for going with SOA from the beginning, Companies can see tremendous benefits and ROI. Cheers |

Sizing is not an easy task and perhaps it doesn't exist one method better than another. In my opinion it's a matter of culture: we have to use the measure that can give us the best answer to our question in according to our goal. In the case of SOA we have to determine what we have to measure, the depth of our measure and first of all our goal. If the goal is the effort estimate for example, the important thing would be to choose one method and to collect historical data with that method, in a coherent way. If it can be useful I attach a presentation that I did at SMEF 2009 in Rome. Best Regards

Hi I need some SOA projects for effort estimation using Function Points. Is there any online resource for it, where completed SOA projects are available. Best Regards Khalid |

I feel COSMIC should be used for SOA..Google it.. good material is available online for SOA estimation |

Hi Venkata, no comments from me on Cosmic but IFPUG can be best used for estimating SOA and it matches the reality. Cheers |
