Session 4: Function Point Sizing in the Age of AI: Rethinking Measurement for Intelligent Systems
Time: 11:40 am – 12:10 pm
Session Abstract:
Artificial Intelligence is fundamentally changing how software is built and delivered. However, traditional productivity and sizing approaches are struggling to keep up.
While Function Point Analysis (FPA) remains one of the most stable and technology-agnostic sizing techniques, it does not fully capture:
a. AI-driven automation
b. Smart System’s complexity
c. Cost of AI (tokens, licensing)
This presentation introduces a practical evolution: Sizing Function Points for AI based systems—an approach that integrates traditional FP with AI-specific complexity and cost dimensions. Below points will be covered in the presentation:
1. The Measurement Problem in AI Systems
a. Effort ≠ Output Anymore (Code generation, Prompt tuning)
b. Rise of “Work Before Work” (Context gathering, Prompt engineering)
c. Hidden Complexity (Sensors, Training pipelines, Model orchestration)
2. Why Function Points Still Matter?
3. Key Challenges in Applying FP to AI?
4. Proposed Framework: AI-Aware Function Point Model
5. Detailed Examples (Sizing below SMART devices using FP):
a. Smart washing machine
b. Smart Thermostat System
c. Smart Home ecosystem
6. Productivity in AI Era
7. Role of Productivity Centre of Excellence
8. Key Recommendations and Future Outlook
