Function Points may be used in software process
improvement and leading software practice studies. The International
Software Benchmarking Standards Group Ltd. (ISBSG), has prepared
a series of reports, called The Benchmark, that are based on
analyses of the project data in the ISBSG Repository. The primary
focus has been the identification of factors that affect the
productivity, delivery time, quality and cost of software projects.
The latest report is described below.
The Benchmark: Release
6
(published April 2000)
The Benchmark: Release 6, the most recent study of
the ISBSG Repository data, analyzes the factors that affect
software project cost, delivery time, productivity, and quality.
This 90-page book provides Project Managers and Chief Information
Officers with a wealth of information that can help in choosing
platforms, languages and tools, planning projects, and, for
those involved in negotiating and managing outsourcing contracts,
information that can be used to establish supplier performance
criteria.

Major sections of the report
present information about:
 |
The demographics
of the 789 projects underlying the report (e.g., development
platform used, application type, business area, language
used, methodology used); |
 |
Breakouts
of project elements (e.g., types of FPs, work effort
by stage); and |
 |
The significance
of factors that affect productivity and delivery time
such as development platform, team size and language.
|
Some of the questions addressed are:
 |
What is
the ideal team size for your new project? (See Chapter
8); and |
 |
Which languages
are related with the best productivity? (See Chapter 6). |
